Continuous emissions monitoring is essential to ensuring that your emissions are being reported on an ongoing basis. This is critical during the initial Measure phase when Carbon Positive's consultants are collating data to create an individual baseline, Continuous emissions monitoring must also be maintained throughout the programme to track progress and ensure that clients continue to reduce carbon emissions in line with the agreed targets.

How long does it take to have all the necessary documents gathered from a shipping company?
This depends on the company's internal structure and processes. The sooner the relevant documents can be received by Carbon Positive, the sooner the programme can progress.

How many different departments of the shipping company have to be involved in the data gathering procedure?
The Carbon Positive programmes require involvement from the technical and operations departments to collate the relevant data.

Should I enter the same data for a sister vessel?
Yes, because even in the case of identical twin vessels, the operational pattern and effects cannot be identical.

How do I ensure that my data entered into the system is secure?
All of the information and data provided is treated in confidence, as per the terms and conditions of the programme.

Can others see what my vessel emits?
No. We do not share your information with third parties without your written consent. The vessel's emissions can be made publicly available, but only if approved by the vessel owner in writing. This could benefit the owners' CSR initiatives, or could be used in new partnership discussions with charterers, as an example.

Who verifies each phase?
Independent verifications are provided by major classification societies to ensure transparency and industry best practice.

How do I move from one phase to another?
Transfer to the next phase or between phases can only occur once the phase requirements have been completed and you receive your Carbon Positive certificate confirming this.

How do I follow the energy performance of my vessel?
Regular reporting and continuous monitoring (EEOI) enables comparisons against member's historical performances as well as against industry benchmarks and baselines.

How are baselines created and used?
Baselines are created and made available by the IMO and other shipping institutions and associations, including INTERTANKO for various vessel types. In the near future these will be enhanced with more ship types and will be further refined and improved. At Carbon Positive a wide range of baselines are made available for comparisons and also to facilitate target setting and benchmarking.

Carbon Positive can provide a range of reports according to your needs; including Carbon Footprint, EEOI, EEDI, SEEMP and Energy Audit.

Can EEDI be used on existing ships?
The current EEDI has been specifically formulated for new build vessels. It could be applied to existing ships if accurate data from construction and sea trials are available, however, this will not reflect the current true energy performance of the ship, and comparisons between EEOI and EEDI are not advised.

Will the EEDI help the shipping industry to improve vessel designs?
The EEDI was intended to stimulate innovation and technical development of all aspects influencing the energy efficiency of a ship at the design stage. With mandatory EEDI now in place, we expect that this will create a demand for vessels that ensure compliance with this regulation, as ship owners, in collaboration with shipyards, identify design improvements - including engine optimization, as an example - in order to comply with EEDI.
