Researcher Eduard Merger, author of the landmark 2008 Forestry
Carbon Standards report, and Carbon Positive have combined to survey
project developers in the afforestation & reforestation (A/R)
sector for the benefit of developers and potential buyers of carbon
credits from this increasingly attractive voluntary carbon market
sub-sector.
Last year, there were 226 forest carbon projects
under development worldwide, with A/R accounting for more than half,
according to Ecosystem Marketplace’s “State of the Forest Carbon Market
2009”. With the creation of different independent project standards and
the maturing of the voluntary carbon market, several approaches to
reduce the methodological, permanence and leakage challenges inherent
to A/R projects have appeared.
Subsequently, the rising
credibility and quality of A/R credits make them increasingly
attractive to buyers, as evidenced by the 2009 Forest Carbon Offsetting
survey by EcoSecurities. However, compared to other project types, A/R
activity involves much longer timeframes for credits to be developed,
certified and delivered to the market. As yet, there are only a few A/R
projects certified to any standard and generating high quality credits.
To
shed more light on all these issues, we have compiled a short survey
consisting of six questions for A/R project developers with these
objectives:
- inform potential buyers on the supply volume of A/R credits they can expect
- identify what project developers require from the Standards
- identify what contractual set-up developers require for their A/R projects
To help the development of the sector, it would be great if you as a
project developer of A/R projects could give
a
minute or so of your time to answer six questions on your activities.
In return, the results and analysis will be made available to all
respondents. Information collected will be used for aggregation
purposes only and individual respondents’ identities and their project
details will be kept confidential.
