A private carbon scheme to preserve Amazon rainforest and replant areas already cleared for farming is being drawn up by Netherlands-based Rabobank, the Financial Times reports.
The scheme will start with a pilot programme in the Xingu region on the Amazon’s southern edge in Mato Grosso state where landowners will be paid more than €50,000 to replant and preserve forest along rivers and streams where environmental impacts of deforestation are greatest.
