Project Overview
Young forest plantationOn behalf of its customers, Carbon Positive is carrying out pilot reforestation projects in Para, Brazil. The pilot projects last three years and are aimed at determining the best aproach to reforesting under the CDM. If the pilot projects are successful, the customers are expected then to reforest areas larger than the pilot areas. During the three years, Carbon Positive will be attempting to have these larger reforestation projects registered as CDM projects.
The objective of each pilot project is:
"To develop a business plan for reforesting deforested land, whereby the reforestation:
- Generates carbon credits under the Clean Development Mechanism of the Kyoto Protocol;
- Establishes a sustainable forestry enterprise that generates income through, for example, sustainable harvesting of timber or other forestry-related products;
- Promotes the protection and/or restoration of the region’s biodiversity and indigenous species;
- Improves local quality of life and ensures forest longevity by integrating forestry operations with local communities in such a way that communities maintain and provide security for the forest and share in the forest’s value; and
- Transfers environmentally-sound technologies, practices and processes to local communities and the host country."
Background to Brazilian deforestation
Deforestation continues at an alarming rate in Brazil, despite concerted efforts from the government and NGOs. In 2004, an area of 10,000 square miles was deforested.
Brazilian deforestation
To illustrate how large the deforested areas are, each one of the red squares on the map of the UK below is 10,000 square miles - the area deforested in Brazil in 2004.
